Hola, and welcome to my BIRD TOURS & PHOTOGRAPHY site!
If you are a nature and bird enthusiastic, and that taking photographs in our warm and enchanting Cuba sounds like an exciting experience to you, then you have come to the right place!
A bit of Background and info:
I am a biologist with more than 15 years of experience with birds in Cuba, Honduras, Dominican Republic and Bahamas. Most of the time I work in the Hicacos Península (Varahicacos Ecological Reserve) which is located in Varadero, Matanzas Province. Varadero is one of the most famous destinations in Cuba.
Accreditations:
I am a Caribbean Birding Trail Certified Guide, Level 5 (highest level); certified by BirdsCaribbean, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of Caribbean birds and habitat.
Birds & Tour Locations:
Tours usually start in the Zapata Swamp, the third largest Wetland in the Americas and one of the best places to birdwatch in Cuba! About 254 birds species are recorded for Zapata. It is a Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar Site, where it is possible to see more than 20 Cuban endemic birds. Some of the most commonly sighted are Greater Flamingo, Zapata Wren, Bee hummingbird (the smallest bird in the world!) Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Zapata Sparrow. All these simply thrive in this Wetland and are much easier to find.
Tour length:
Just two or three days will be plenty of time to see the birds mentioned above, and about a hundred different other species!
If you want more:
To successfully fulfill a list of about 90 % of all Cuban endemic , I recommend continuing the birding tour to some other places like Viñales Valley, La Guira and Sierra del Rosairo, in Pinar del Rio.
Finally a trip to the central part of Cuba to see the Cuban Gnatcatcher and Oriente Warbler would complete your Cuban bird watching experience.
And if you STILL want more:
There are other places to discover in the eastern part of Cuba. Mountain trips to Nipe – Sagua – Baracoa, Sierra Maestra, all in the most eastern part of our country would provide most of the birds you seek.
